Fresh flower care and handling

Wholesale Flower Care

Flower Care & Handling

  • Every wholesale flower and DIY wedding flower order is custom hand packed at our own facility in Southern California. We spend a great deal on the details and include ice packs, a Thermo blanket in the box, and the wooden cleats are there to keep the flowers in place.
  • Your flowers have traveled overnight and will be thirsty so it is important to process them as soon as possible upon arrival. Read the Care & Handling card included in your shipment.
  • Roses have outside guard petals which should be removed.
  • Keep your flowers in a cool well-ventilated place (not direct sunlight) until you can get them in a flower food solution.
  • Don’t forget how important it is to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet.
  • Fill a clean (washed with a detergent or antibacterial cleaning solution), deep vase with water and add flower food.
  • Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial microbial growth that may limit water uptake by the flower.
  • Re-cut stems at an angle by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife or garden scissors.
  • Place the flowers in the vase solution you’ve prepared.
  • Refresh the water every couple days and follow/repeat the same procedure as described above.
  • Using lukewarm water allows the water to enter the stem more rapidly, so conditioning is quicker. However, use cold water for bulb flowers like peonies, unless you want them to open quickly.
  • Flowers and foliage stems should be cut on an angle and left in the water so they can hydrate for at least 4-6 hours, and preferably overnight, before arranging them.
  • Hydrangeas – if they don’t take up water they can be left upside down in a water bucket with the entire flower head submerged. It works if they look dry.
  • Always use a clean vase and quality water.
  • Remove any flowers that with time look less than pristine, as this will keep the remaining flowers looking fresh.

What Not To Do

  • Don’t use a substitute for flower food such as aspirin, soda, or a penny.
  • Never place your flowers with or near fresh fruit or cigarette smoke as both produce ethylene gas which will shorten flower life.
  • Don’t place flowers in direct sunlight or other sources of excessive heat.
  • Don’t use flower food in crystal or metal containers as the acid in the flower food will react with metal including the lead in crystal vases & bowls. Just use plain water in those cases.
